"Most experts agree that a handgun is the least desirable firearm to choose for defense. The advantage of firepower and inherent accuracy usually makes selection of some type of shoulder weapon the obvious choice. However, in many cases, such as driving, climbing, rappelling, fighting in very close quarters, crawling through narrow places, carrying something, or being wounded, a handgun has a definite advantage. In most of these real life cases, which are common, only one hand is used to control the weapon. We tell people that the original inventors had that intent when they designed the weapon and that is why it was called a handgun and not hand(s) gun. Over the years of training, we have had a number of past students who claim to be alive because they learned those one handed skills at our school. Unfortunately, most shooting schools, including those operated by the military and police, do very little training with one hand."

"With the advent of the video recorder mounted in the police car, many shootouts have been recorded in the last few years. A review of these shows a majority of the officers using one hand techniques even when they were not trained to do so. At the Rogers Shooting School half of our instruction is dedicated toward one hand use of the weapon. This is just one of the aspects that separate us from other schools. The main difference between our school and others is that we teach the students how to successfully engage small partial targets that are only exposed for fractions of a second. From the first drill of the first day, our targets are exposed for less than a second and they never get slower. Many very experienced shooters of prestigious fighting units have found shooting at Rogers ranges to be very challenging. Most if not all police and military agencies have been exclusively trained to shoot what we call "Precision" shooting with a handgun. These people find themselves in trouble when they are forced to shoot at partial targets that are moving quickly. Would they have the same problem in real life? You can count on it. Analyzing the Uniform Crime Report statistics on the number of shots fired at very close distances shows that less than 20% of the bullets fired by police hit the intended target."

Retired FBI agent Bill Rogers developed the Rogers Range more than forty years ago. His reactive shooting techniques revolve around human neurological performance and thought processing studies. The target exposure times and sequencing on the range are structured on the brain's ability to process information and the minimum reaction / action times associated with it.

When training on the Rogers Range, shooters face an enclosure in which seven, 8” concealed targets lie in wait from a distance of 5 to 20 yards. Targets are pneumatically operated and driven by a computer in either prearranged or random courses of fire. All targets are reactive in design, meaning solid hits take them down and out of the fight, offering the most realistic challenge in handgun training to date. You simply cannot learn to shoot faster and more accurately than this.

The school is located 20 miles SW of Gatesville Texas. The range is in a remote location without a physical address. The actual location will be sent to students who enroll in the class.

What is the closest commercial airport to the shooting school?

Austin Bergstrom Airport is the closest "large" airport, approximately 90 miles from the range.

How is Rogers Range TX affiliated with Mission Critical TX?

The Rogers Range TX reactive shooting range is but one of many unique ranges at the Mission Critical training ranch. RRTX is a sub-brand of Mission Critical, which operates, staffs and maintains the Rogers Range facility. See video below for more information about the ranch.

What does the range look like?

The Rogers Range TX is equipped with a number of fans and is situated in an area of the ranch that always seems to have a breeze in the summer. The entire shooting area is covered from the elements, making for great training all year round.

Are your courses available to civilians?

Yes, all but a handful of courses are open enrollment, meaning they are available to responsible
US Citizens, Military and Law Enforcement.

Do you offer Military and LEO only courses?

Yes. Often times the range is closed to outsiders for private 2, 3 and 5 days courses specifically designed to suit the needs of a particular agency, team or unit.

Which class should I take?

Currently, our society has undergone some fundamental changes. Depending where you work or live you may not feel as safe as you normally have and many law abiding citizens have become first time gun owners. We offer a Rogers Range Prep Class that was designed with this influx of brand new shooters or people that have had a gun but have never had a reason to take it out of the box.

The Rogers Range Prep Class is focuses on the fundamental shooting principles with the 4 day Rogers Range class in mind. This 2 day class is offered 3 times per year. It is NOT necessary to take the Prep class before the normal 4 day Rogers Range class, but if one is inexperienced (i.e. not capable of drawing from holster and delivering accurate shot placement in 1.50 seconds or less), the Prep course will be a blessing to them.

Class cost $500 PLUS ammo. Approximate round count is 1250 +/- 10%.

What are the requirements for signing up for a course?

Citizenship / Legal Immigrant Status:
You must be an American Citizen or possess a green card along with a state issued hunting permit. We need high resolution scanned color copies of both your valid federal Green Card and state issued hunting permit.

Good Legal Standing:
All students are required to provide one of the following at the time of registration:

High resolution scanned color copy of your valid state issued license to carry; or

High resolution scanned color copy of your valid state or federally issued Law Enforcement, Armed Forces or Governmental Service Agency identification

How well do ladies typically do on the course?

Simple answer: EXTREMELY well. We love nothing more than when the ladies roll in and show the guys how it's done! We have ladies of all skill levels train with us, from beginners to competitive three gun shooters. See video below:

Physical Demands:

You must be physically fit enough to be able to stand on your feet for extended periods of time, in seasonal weather extremes, with the ability to safely handle a firearm within close proximity to other students and instructors. Training blocks typically run for approximately one hour, with ten minute breaks between them.Minimum physical standards are follows:

Sufficient hand strength to load a nominal 500 rounds per day on your own, into your magazines.
Sufficient hand strength in both your right and left hand to safely manipulate and fire your pistol without support from the opposite hand.
Ability to see your front sight at arm’s length, as well as 8” targets clearly at distances between 5 and 20 yards. Corrective safety rated lenses are both acceptable and recommended if needed.
Ability to kneel down and stand up again safely and repeatedly while holding a live pistol pointed safely down range in one hand.
Ability to walk forward, backward and laterally while operating a live pistol pointed safely down range, within proximity of other students and instructors.

Students are encouraged to discuss their level of fitness with their physician prior to attending a course. Should you choose to attend and are not able to meet these minimum requirements, you will not be allowed to participate in the training and your money will not be refunded.

What type of pistol is best for Rogers Range?

What type sights do you recommend?

If you are a professional running a duty gun, run duty sights.

As long as you can quickly obtain focus on your front sight, your stock factory sights will work just fine. If you have the option, you might consider a crisp, competition style fiber optic sight. For fiber optic sights, we recommend Dawson Precision over all others.

If you training includes night shooting, night sights are recommended.

What type of pistol is best for Rogers Range?

A modern striker or hammer fired semi-automatic pistol with a magazine capacity of 14 rounds or more is recommended. It is possible and acceptable to run with a smaller magazine capacity, as long as you are very proficient with your reloads. We can also offer you the opportunity to shoot some different types of pistols to help determine if your pistol is the best choice for you.

Do you offer pistol rentals for Rogers Range TX class?

Yes, only $50 plus tax for 4 day course.

All ammo and firearm rentals are subject to 6.25% TX state sales tax.

Is one pistol caliber better than another for training at the Rogers School?

Yes. Due to the high number of rounds fired each day (approx. 550), 9 MM is typically found to cause less physical stress on the shooter than other center fire cartridges. Unless you are physically conditioned to shooting 500+ rounds a day from your favorite (or duty) pistol and cartridge, we recommend running a 9MM for training at our school.

Is there a specific type of ammunition that I must use at the school?

Yes. All students other than military and LEO units (training in private courses) must use a copper plated or a frangible bullet. The copper jacket on standard ball ammunition poses a serious risk of separating from the lead core and deflecting back on the shooter from our steel targets. Copper plated bullets, however, do not have a copper jacket that can separate. Copper plated or polymer jacketed round nose projectiles are required. No hollow points.

Do you sell ammunition at the range?

Yes, we sell 9MM, 115 grain TMJ round nose ammunition only, which can be purchased through our STORE at cost plus tax. We do not mark up the ammunition or make a profit on it.Note: Due to prejudiced policies of many large companies, ammo is called "SUPPLIES" in the STORE.

If I need to ship ammunition or other supplies to the school, what is the shipping address?

The shipping address will be provided to students who enroll in the class.

What is the best holster to bring?

We strongly recommend bringing a modern, high quality, outside the waistband, RETENTION type holster, made of kydex material. For a better understanding of holster retention levels, clickHERE
Buyer beware. Not all holsters are created equally. Some of the lower grade kydex holsters can deform in the heat or crack under stress. Holsters made of nylon material, leather holsters, cross draw holsters, shoulder holsters and Blackhawk brand Serpa holsters are not allowed. If you are unsure of your gear, we are happy to go discuss it with you prior to class.

No IWB, no appendix carry holsters allowed on any RR class. NO SERPA HOLSTERS ALLOWED

What should I bring to the school?

Pistol with a minimum of 4 high capacity magazines
Ammunition (can be purchased at the school with prior coordination)
Ten (10) dummy rounds for your pistol caliber (you must bring your own)
Modern holster (SEE ABOVE)
Sturdy everyday carry gun belt, duty belt rig or battle belt (you must wear a belt)
Magazine holsters / carriers
Dump pouch (optional)
Shooting glasses, both tinted and clear (mandatory - must be worn at all times)
AMPLIFIED electronic hearing protection + spare batteries (this is mandatory)
Hand-held flashlight + spare batteries (if the night shoot is part of your program)

A Note about hearing protection:

In order to hear one another on the range during live fire training, amplified electronic hearing protection is required - but it does not have to be expensive. Popular brands include: Walkers, Howard Leight, Peltor and MSA Sordin, starting as low as $45.00

How should I prepare myself for an upcoming course?

Read, “Be Fast, Be Accurate, Be the Best”. A copy of the book can be purchased from our online store. Practice the drills spelled out from pages 54 to 103. Pay particular attention to pages 76 and 102.

Prior to attending a course, your range training sessions should include a healthy amount of support hand and strong hand only work, which can easily be done at your local range. You will be ahead of the curve if precision one handed shooting is comfortable for you to perform.

How does the Rogers scoring / rating system work?

As a part of any course selected, students shoot the standardized Rogers Shooting School test. This is the same test that's been administered to tens of thousands of shooters for decades. It is a 125 point possible score reactive shooting test, with each hit on target counting as a point.

Scoring / Rating System:
70 to 89 is passing and affords a Rogers Range BASIC rating.
90 to 109 is an INTERMEDIATE rating.
110 to 125 is an ADVANCED rating.

Not everyone passes the test(achieves a rating) in the first or second day of a Basic course, however, come day 3, we see scores drastically increase. Often times it takes the mind and body a couple of days of exposure to get tuned into shooting at targets moving at such a high rate of speed. Don't be discouraged and certainly don't be intimidated. Our instructors will be there to assist you every step of the way. We all started off shooting 40's & 50's and worked our way up from there. Once you've got the Rogers shooting method dialed in, your performance will quickly skyrocket.

My eyesight isn't what it used to be, what do you recommend for shooting glasses?

The first step would be finding a good optometrist near you to perform and examination. Let the optometrist know that you need to be able to focus on your front sight clearly, when your pistol is at full arm extension. Once you have the desired prescription and pupil distance you can contact a company like Tactical RX and have them make you a pair of ballistic rated shooting glasses.

How do I register for a class?

What is the school’s cancellation policy?

If you have to cancel, it must be done before 60 days of the start of a class. We will refund your deposit less a $25.00 per person processing fee. There will be no refund for a cancellation less than 60 days before the start of a class. We understand that extenuating circumstances occur and if you must cancel in the 60 day window, please reach out to us.

For large groups that schedule a class and purchase ammo, should you need to cancel after booking, ammo can not be refunded. However, we will carry it over to your rescheduled class.
